Hard Water Spots on Shower Glass: Why It Happens and How to Remove Them

Quick answer: Those white spots are minerals — mostly calcium and magnesium — left behind when hard water dries on the glass. Chicagoland water carries enough of them that spotting starts within days on a new enclosure. Fresh deposits come off with an acidic cleaner: 50/50 white vinegar and water, five minutes of dwell time, microfiber, rinse, squeegee. Deposits left for years etch the surface, and etched glass cannot be cleaned — only polished, or replaced. The fingernail test below tells you which one you have in about three seconds.

Why It Happens So Fast Here
Hard water simply means water carrying dissolved minerals, and much of the Chicago area’s supply carries a lot of them. Every shower coats the glass in a thin film of that water. The water evaporates; the minerals don’t. They stay, bond to the surface, and the next shower lays another film on top of the last.
That’s why spotting looks like it appears overnight. It doesn’t — it accumulates in invisible layers until enough of them stack up to scatter light, and then the glass looks cloudy all at once. Shampoo, conditioner and especially bar soap add a second film on top, which is why the two problems usually show up together.
The Fingernail Test
Dry the glass, then run a fingernail across a bad area.

Removing Deposits, by Severity
Light — days to a few weeks
- Spray 50/50 white vinegar and warm water across the panel
- Let it sit 5 minutes — don’t skip this; dwell time does the work
- Wipe with microfiber, top to bottom
- Rinse with warm water, then squeegee dry
Moderate — months of buildup
- Use a purpose-made hard-water or lime-scale remover for glass, as directed
- Work in sections so nothing dries on the surface
- Expect to repeat it twice; one pass rarely clears a year of layers
- Finish with glass cleaner and a squeegee
Heavy — years
At this point you’re looking at professional restoration: a cerium-oxide polish with a variable-speed polisher, done wet. It’s slow work and it’s easy to leave a distortion in the glass if it’s done wrong. If the panel is also chipped at an edge, replacement is the better spend — edge chips are where spontaneous breakage starts.

Coatings: What They Do and Don’t Do
A coating applied at fabrication bonds to the glass and fills the pores that minerals grab onto. Water beads and runs instead of sheeting, and routine cleaning takes noticeably less effort.
What it doesn’t do: last forever, or replace the squeegee. Coatings wear with use and cleaning, and aftermarket versions wear faster than factory-applied ones. If you’re already ordering a new enclosure, it’s the cheapest moment to add one. If someone tells you a coating means never cleaning the glass again, they’re selling.
Does Hard Water Damage Anything Besides the Glass?
- Hardware: minerals build at hinges and clamps and pit the finish where water sits. Wipe them dry

When Replacement Is the Right Call
- The glass is etched and a polish would cost a meaningful share of a new panel
- There’s an edge chip alongside the etching
- The hardware line is discontinued and parts can’t be matched
- The enclosure is a dated framed unit with tracks that never come clean
- You’re remodeling anyway — new glass in an old frame rarely looks right
