Storefront glass is not residential glass with a bigger footprint. It has to meet commercial code, take daily traffic, handle wind load on an exposed street corner, and in most cases it has to be tempered or laminated safety glass. Chicago is hard on storefront glass in ways that show up over years, not weeks.

Winter puts a forty-degree difference across a single pane, warm retail air on one side, single digits on the other. That thermal stress is real, and it is why a panel with a chipped edge can fail on a cold night without anyone touching it. Lake-effect wind on an exposed corner adds load that an inland building never sees. Then there is salt, slush, and door traffic hitting the same threshold every winter.

Specifying for that matters. Correct glass thickness for the span, tempered or laminated where code requires it, insulated units where you are trying to control heating cost, and hardware rated for the actual door cycle count. We size the glass to the conditions the storefront is in, not the minimum that will pass.

Not every service call needs new glass. Commercial entry doors fail at the hardware long before the glass gives out, because that is the part doing the work.

Common calls we run in Chicago: door closers that no longer close the door fully, pivots and hinges worn from years of traffic, misaligned doors that drag on the threshold, failed weatherstripping letting cold air into the entry, and broken pull handles or locks. We service these on existing storefront systems whether or not we installed them.

If a door is out of alignment, it is worth fixing early. A door that drags is putting stress on the glass and the frame at the same time, and that turns a hardware call into a glass replacement.

Commercial glass is priced per project, because the variables are wider than residential work. Panel size and thickness, whether the glass is tempered, laminated, or an insulated unit, the framing system already in place, whether the install needs off-hours scheduling to avoid disrupting business, and access at the site all factor in. A single display panel replacement and a full storefront retrofit are not the same conversation. We come out, measure, review your framing system, and give you a written quote with the specification spelled out so you know exactly what is being installed.

It starts with a site visit. We look at the opening, identify the framing system, take measurements, and talk through what the glass actually needs to do for that location. If you are a tenant, we can work with your building management on access and scheduling.

Once the specification is set and the quote is approved, the glass goes into fabrication. We schedule install around your operating hours where the job allows it, including early mornings or after close, so you are not shutting the doors during business hours. Our crew handles the install, hauls the old glass, and cleans the site.
