Yes, this is a common part of a mirror replacement. Many older bathroom mirrors were installed with mirror mastic or construction adhesive directly on the drywall, which means removal takes more care than pulling off a mirror that was clipped or J-bar mounted.

A glued mirror has to come off in a way that protects you from the glass breaking during removal, since a fully adhered mirror does not release cleanly the way a clipped one does. Once it is off, the wall behind it is often left with adhesive residue, uneven paint, or drywall damage from where the mastic pulled at the surface, and that repair is a separate step from the mirror install itself.
