We do a fair amount of work in Crestwood’s townhome and condominium developments, and the first thing owners are surprised by is that we still measure every unit.

Units built from the same plan should be interchangeable. In practice, framing tolerances stack, buildings settle unevenly, and a bathroom on an end unit rarely matches one in the middle of a row. A quarter inch of difference is enough to turn a properly cut panel into one that binds or gaps.

The variety of housing here means we get to the same conclusion by two different routes.

In the older single-family homes, decades of settling have left tub alcoves that taper from ceiling to floor. Many have had tile laid over the original tile, shifting the dimension again. Semi-frameless glass shower doors usually perform best in those, because the perimeter framing spans what a frameless panel cannot.

In townhomes and condos, the walls are generally younger and truer, but the bathrooms are tight and clearance runs short. A hinged door needs roughly its own width of open floor to swing, and in a unit bath the vanity is often closer than that. Sliding glass shower doors solve it by keeping the panels inside the opening.

Neither situation is unusual and neither is a problem once it has been measured. What does not work is assuming a standard size and ordering to it.

There are two situations where we recommend replacing instead. One is anchoring that has pulled out and damaged the substrate behind it. The other is hardware from a discontinued line, where matching parts genuinely cannot be sourced. Fabricating around unobtainable hardware buys a few months, and you should hear that before paying for it rather than after.

Custom shower doors start at $999. Glass thickness, hardware finish, and the complexity of the opening determine where a project lands.
