Sliding Glass Doors for Chicago Homes and Businesses
Sliding Glass Doors for Chicago Homes and Businesses
We replace, repair, and install sliding glass doors across Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Patio door glass, mirrored closet doors, and interior sliding panels.
Most calls we get about sliding doors are not about buying a new door. They are about a door that has gone foggy between the panes, or one that has become almost impossible to push. Both are fixable, and both cost far less than replacing the whole unit.
If the frame is sound, the glass is usually the only thing that needs to change. We measure the opening, cut the glass to it, and set it in the existing frame.

Our Sliding Glass Door Services
We provide glass replacement, hardware repair, and new installation for sliding patio doors, mirrored closet doors, and interior sliding glass panels throughout Chicagoland.
Foggy Patio Doors and Failed Seals
A sliding patio door usually has an insulated glass unit, which is two panes of glass with a sealed gap between them. That gap is dry when the unit is made. When the seal around the edge fails, humid air gets in and moisture condenses between the panes.
That fog cannot be cleaned off, because it is on the inside of a sealed assembly. No product fixes it. The insulated unit has to be replaced, though the door frame, hardware, and track usually stay exactly where they are.
Sliding Doors in a Chicago Climate
Sliding patio doors take more abuse in Chicago than in most places, and it shows up in two ways.
The first is the seal. A patio door spends January with heated air on one side and single digits on the other. That temperature difference makes the sealed unit expand and contract every day, and the edge seal is what absorbs it. After enough winters the seal gives out and the fog starts. Doors on a south or west exposure tend to fail sooner, because sun load adds to the cycle.
The second is grit. Salt, sand, and slush get tracked onto the threshold all winter, and the track is right there at floor level collecting it. That debris grinds down rollers and gouges the track. A door that got harder to open every winter for five years did not wear out on its own. It has been running through sand.
Compare Shower Door Types
We fabricate and install frameless, semi-frameless, and sliding glass shower doors, along with fixed panels for walk-in showers. Here is how the four compare on the factors that matter most when choosing.
| Feature | Frameless | Semi-Frameless | Sliding | Fixed Panel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glass Thickness | 3/8 in or 1/2 in | 1/4 in or 3/8 in | 1/4 in to 3/8 in | 3/8 in or 1/2 in |
| Framing | None, hinges and clamps only | Slim perimeter, open door panel | Framed or slim framed on track | None, wall channel or clamps |
| Swing Clearance Needed | Yes, roughly door width | Yes, roughly door width | None | None |
| Handles Uneven Walls | Least tolerance | Most tolerance | Good tolerance | Limited tolerance |
| Cleaning and Upkeep | Easiest, no tracks | Wipe framing regularly | Bottom track collects buildup | Easiest, no moving parts |
| Wall Anchoring | Studs or blocking required | Standard anchoring | Standard anchoring | Studs or blocking required |
| Best Suited To | Renovated baths with true walls | Older homes, settled openings | Tub alcoves and tight bathrooms | Walk-in and curbless showers |
| Relative Cost | Highest | Mid range | Most affordable | Varies with panel size |
Custom shower doors start at $999. Every enclosure is templated on-site and fabricated to your opening, so the right choice depends on your bathroom rather than on the chart alone. Call (708) 808-7775 for a free on-site estimate.
Sliding Glass Inside the Home
Sliding glass is not only an exterior product.
Mirrored bypass closet doors were installed in enormous numbers in homes built between the 1960s and the 1980s, and a lot of them are still hanging in Chicago-area bedrooms. By now many have dark spotting along the bottom edge, which is the mirror backing failing from moisture. That cannot be repaired, but we can cut replacement mirror panels to fit the existing frames.
Interior sliding glass panels are a newer request. A top-hung glass door on a barn-style track closes off a home office or a pantry without swinging into the room, and without blocking light the way a solid door does. Frosted or reeded glass gives you privacy while still passing daylight. These are a good fit in older Chicago homes where floor plans were opened up and the owner now wants some of that separation back.
Sliding Glass Door Pricing
Sliding glass work is quoted per job, since the range is wide. Roller and track repair sits at the low end and is a small cost compared to replacing a door. Insulated glass replacement for a patio door is priced by panel size and glass specification, and it costs a fraction of a full door replacement because the frame, hardware, and track all stay in place. Mirrored closet panels are priced by size and edgework. Interior sliding panels depend on glass thickness, finish, and the track system. We look at the door, tell you what it actually needs, and quote before any work starts.
Getting Your Sliding Door Fixed
Call and tell us what the door is doing. Foggy, cracked, sticking, or off its track. That usually tells us whether it is a glass call or a hardware call, and what to bring with us.
We come out, measure, and quote before starting. Roller and track work is often handled in the same visit. If glass needs fabricating, we measure the opening then and schedule installation once the unit is ready. Either way you get an honest assessment first, including whether replacing the glass is worth it or whether the door itself is past saving.
