Glass Railing Services for Chicago for Homes, Decks, and Commercial Spaces
We fabricate and install glass railings across Chicago and the suburbs. Interior stairs, open landings, balconies, decks, mezzanines, and commercial guards.
Glass is the only trade we work in. That is deliberate. We are not a general contractor bidding railings as one line among fifteen, and we are not a supplier shipping you panels and wishing you luck. We measure on site, fabricate to those measurements, and install with our own crew.
A glass railing has to do two jobs at once. It has to disappear visually, and it has to hold a person up. Getting both right comes down to the glass thickness, the anchoring, and whether the structure underneath was built to take the load.

Where Glass Railings Work
We handle railing work on residential and commercial projects throughout Chicagoland, from a single open stair in a bungalow to full balcony runs in a new build.
When to Bring Railings Into the Schedule
Railings sit at the end of the schedule, which puts them in a bad spot. By the time we are called, the job has usually absorbed delays from earlier trades, and somebody is asking when the stairs can be used.
There is one thing that protects your timeline more than anything else, and it happens early: blocking. Glass panels are heavy, and the hardware has to anchor into solid structure, not drywall. If we can tell you where the blocking goes while the walls are still open, the install is straightforward. If the walls are already closed, the fix is expensive and it is visible.
The second thing is templating at the right moment. We measure after the flooring and treads are down, because that is when the opening becomes real. Measuring off framing produces glass that does not fit the finished space, and glass cannot be trimmed after fabrication.
Why Railings Are Not a Do It Yourself Item
Plenty of remodelers handle simple glass themselves. Order a panel, have a carpenter set it. On a square opening with forgiving tolerances that works fine.
Railings are different, for two reasons.
The first is that stairs are almost never square. Treads settle, stringers twist, and a run that measures true at the bottom is out by a quarter inch at the top. Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or trimmed after it is made. A panel that comes in wrong is not a punch list item, it is a reorder and a schedule hit.
The second is that a railing is a life safety component. It has to hold a person leaning on it, and the anchoring has to hold that load for the life of the building. When a panel is anchored into drywall instead of blocking, the failure does not show up at final walkthrough. It shows up two years later, on somebody’s warranty.
Bringing in a glass trade moves that risk off the project. We carry the measurement, the fabrication, and the install, which means we carry the consequence if the fit is wrong.
Glass Railing Code Requirements in Chicago
A guard is required anywhere the drop is more than 30 inches. Guard height and infill spacing are set by code, and glass railings have their own rules on top of that.
The main one people are not expecting: a railing that has no top rail generally has to use laminated glass, not plain tempered. Tempered glass is strong, but when it breaks it breaks all at once. Laminated glass keeps the panel in place because the interlayer holds the pieces together. If you want the pure frameless look with nothing across the top, that is the glass you need.
We specify glass type, thickness, and anchoring to the requirements that apply to your project and confirm them with the local jurisdiction before anything is ordered. Chicago proper, the suburbs, and unincorporated county areas do not all inspect the same way, and it is cheaper to know that before fabrication than after.
Working With Designers, Builders, and Property Managers
Not every trade partner is a GC.
Interior designers bring us in when a railing detail needs to survive contact with an actual staircase. We will tell you honestly whether a standoff mount clears the stringer, whether the panel size on the drawing can be handled up the stairs, and whether a frameless run works against the wall conditions on site. We are happy to be the reality check before the client sees a rendering they cannot have.
Property managers and building owners call us for common area railings, balcony guards, and panel replacement across a portfolio. That work has its own rhythm, since access, elevator scheduling, and resident coordination matter as much as the glass. We are set up for it.
Builders working repeat plans get one measurement of a representative unit and a scope priced as a package, with individual openings still templated before fabrication.
What Glass Railings Cost in Chicago
We price railings per project rather than off a rate card, because the variables that drive cost are specific to the job: glass type and thickness, laminated versus tempered, panel count and size, mounting method, hardware finish, whether the run is interior or exterior, code requirements, and site access.
The mounting method usually moves the number the most. A post mounted or clamp system costs less than a base shoe channel, and a full frameless standoff run with no top rail costs the most, because it needs thicker laminated glass and more structure underneath.
Send us photos, plans, or dimensions and we will give you a preliminary number. We confirm it with an on site visit before anything goes to fabrication.
